The Average American Yard

If the whole US was one, big, yard it might look something like this. A lot of lawn, a fair amount of impervious area (driveway, home, walkway), a tiny veggie garden, and a sprinkling of trees, flowers, and shrubs. It's a familiar site across the US--no matter where you live--and it's increasing in size by roughly 2.1 million acres every year. Since most of the landscaping in the average yard (lawn and impervious area) are relatively useless for birds, we think it's worth starting a conversation about how to change practices in the average yard to put that space to use for birds.
